The Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts presents, Caput Mortuum: Photography by Jennifer Bockelman, on display Monday, July 31 through September 1, 2017. A gallery reception will be held on August 17 from 5-7 p.m. in conjunction with KHN’s monthly Third Thursday Open Studio event. Jennifer Bockelman’s recent series of photographs come from an interest in themes of power as filtered through language, in particular, official governmental output such as tweets. This exhibition reflects an attempt to pit magical thinking against its own logic, to transform lead into gold. Bockelman holds Bachelors of Science in K-12 Art and Secondary English from Concordia University and a MFA in Sculpture from the University of Colorado. An artist in many different mediums, her past work includes stitched pieces, drawings, impotent political gestures, and performances, often full of wry questions and forced examinations. Bockelman has always enjoyed art’s capacity for stealth, how it can fly under the radar as a holder of many truths. A contradiction, she claims, “I am simultaneously sincere and snarky, helpful and unconstructive.” Bockelman was a KHN resident in 2014. Since 2001, KHN’s residency program has hosted more than 70 working artists each year¬–a combination of visual artists, writers, composers, and interdisciplinary artists from across the country and around the world. KHN’s gallery program hosts approximately six exhibitions, annually, focusing on regional artists and alumni residents. KHN is a program of the Richard P. Kimmel and Laurine Kimmel Charitable Foundation, Inc. The Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts is located at 801 Third Corso in Nebraska City and is regularly open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m and for special events. Both the exhibit and the reception are free, handicapped accessible, and open to the public.
