UNO political scientist: two factors behind Mayoral recall efforts

Omaha, NE – A UNO political scientist says personality and job performance are the two factors that lead to Omaha mayoral recall efforts.

Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle faces a recall election in mid to late January. If a simple majority of Omaha voters approve a recall, Suttle will be the second Omaha mayor in the city's history to be recalled.

Tree of Lights donations down $50,000 from last year

Omaha, NE – Donations to the Salvation Army's Tree of Lights campaign are down $50,000 from this time last year.

The 2010 campaign ends December 24th. Salvation Army of Omaha spokeswoman Susan Eustice says donations to the red kettles are down significantly, reflecting a national trend. This year's goal is $3.1 million. She says the economy is hurting donations at the same time the Salvation Army is providing services to more people and families in need.

OPS to use metal detectors at some sporting events

Omaha, NE – Metal detectors will begin appearing at some Omaha Public Schools high school basketball games this weekend.

The OPS board Monday evening approved spending $60,000 for the use of four metal detectors. Lion's Gate Security will operate the metal detectors at sporting events deemed "priority," where large crowds are expected.

More than 28,000 recall petition signatures verified

Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle

Omaha, NE – The Douglas County Election Commission verified 28,720 recall petition signatures, setting up a possible recall election in January.

The Mayor Suttle Recall Committee turned in more than 37,000 signatures November 19th. During a news conference Saturday, Election Commissioner Dave Phipps announced that 25 percent of the recall petition signatures were thrown out.
