Omaha economic indicators show steady, stable growth

Omaha, NE – The Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce's December 2007 economic indicators show more than 8,400 jobs were added between December 2006 and 2007. Senior Director Scott Strain says the manufacturing, professional and business services, education, and health care sectors all added jobs. He says despite national economic trouble, Omaha's economy is showing stable, steady growth. Strain points out that this is the first growth in the manufacturing sector since 2000.

Tax pilot program aims to help families be financially stable

Omaha, NE – The Financial Stability Partnership and H and R Block are planning to accept 250 families in the pilot program. Partnership spokeswoman Julie Kalkowski says families who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit can call the United Way's 211 line to find free tax preparation sites. At those sites, they can set up a savings account when they have their taxes done. Kalkowski says the goal is to help families set up and build savings to help them become more financially stable. Pet owners reminded to shelter animals from the cold

Omaha, NE – With bitterly cold weather sticking around through this week, the Nebraska Humane Society wants pet owners to make sure their animals are safe and warm. Humane Society spokeswoman Pam Wiese says outdoor pets should be brought inside. If that isn't possible, Wiese says pet owners should make sure the pet's outdoor shelter is shielded from the cold. She says the pet's house shouldn't be much larger than the animal. It should be lined with hay and have a door. Also, Wiese says outdoor pets should have additional food and water.

Five Living the Dream awards presented

Omaha, NE – The three individuals and two organizations were given awards for community service. The "Living the Dream" awards are part of the city's annual Martin Luther King Junior celebration. Alvin Goodwin, Paul Bryant and Pastor Leroy Adams Junior received awards, along with the Assistance League of Omaha and Omaha Table Talk. The celebration also featured musical performances from the Northwest High School Choir and the Morning Star Baptist Church Mass Choir.
