1 person critically injured in reported Omaha explosion

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say one person has been seriously injured following a reported explosion in Omaha.

An Omaha hazardous waste disposal unit responded to the scene shortly after 1:15 p.m. Tuesday near the BNSF rail yards in Omaha. The wounded person was transported to CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center in extremely critical condition.

An employee at a nearby body shop tells the Omaha World-Herald that he heard what sounded like two trains colliding, then looked and saw flames shooting into the air.

Reports to Douglas County emergency dispatchers about half an hour after the explosion indicated no fire had started and the area had been evacuated. No other injuries have been reported.

No further information has been released.
