2017 mayoral race will be a tight one

The City of Omaha’s General Election takes place Tuesday, May 9th.  Polls are open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Paul Landow, Professor of Political Science at UNO, says it’s important to vote.  He says the voter turnout in the primary was remarkably low at about 20%.

Landow explains that 20% of registered voters not even eligible voters.  That means well under 20% of the people of Omaha are making the decision about who the next mayor will be.

Landow says one of Stothert’s biggest strengths is that she’s well-known.

"She’s got a track record as mayor.  People can see what she’s done.  She takes pride in a number of her accomplishments.  And if people are happy with the way the city is going, that will be reflected in the final vote.”

Landow says Senator Mello’s biggest strength is that he had a really good run in the state legislature for eight years.

"So really the decision for the voters is, do we keep the person we’ve already got, I guess you might say a proven leader that’s done pretty well or are we more interested in a fresh, young face that will bring new ideas?”

Ultimately, voters will make their choice on Tuesday, May 9th during the General Election.  More information on the election is available at votedouglascounty.comor by calling 402-444-VOTE.
