5 apply for open seat in Nebraska Legislature

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Five Sarpy County residents have applied for an open seat in the Nebraska Legislature.

An aide to Governor Dave Heineman said Friday that the governor's office has received applications from Carol Blood, Tommy Lee Garrett, Benny Heald, and Patrick Shannon, all of Bellevue; and Jane Nielsen of Papillion.

Applications were due at 5 p.m. Friday. The applicants are looking to replace state Senator Scott Price of Bellevue, who announced in September that he was stepping down because of family demands.

Price, a Republican, was first elected in 2008 and re-elected last year to the District 3 seat.

The governor's appointee would serve until Jan. 6, 2015, and stand for election to a two-year term in November 2014.
