Ashford: Tuesday's election sent a clear message

Second District Congressman-elect Brad Ashford says voters “sent a clear message” in last week’s election.

Ashford, a Democrat, defeated incumbent Republican Congressman Lee Terry in the race for Nebraska’s Second District. Ashford says the message from voters was clear: lawmakers need to work together and be more connected to their constituents.

"We’ve got to learn how to govern again, we’ve lost our way, and that is really the biggest issue of the moment. And if we don’t get that fixed soon, within the next month or two, then the next year is going to be, it’ll be like the other years. Nothing will get done."

Ashford says it would be “wrong-headed” to try and repeal the Affordable Care Act. But he says the act’s employer mandate needs to be addressed.

Ashford will be the first Democrat to represent the Second Congressional District since 1994, when Republican Jon L. Christensen was elected to replace Democratic representative Peter Hoagland.
