Benson Business District renovation project begins next month

The Benson Business District renovation is expected to take about three months to complete.

Construction begins in mid-July on the project from 59th to 63rd Streets and Maple Street. It includes widening of sidewalks and curbs, new bicycle racks, additional street lighting, and an event space on Military Avenue.

City Councilman Pete Festersen says the $1.9 million project is funded through a public-private partnership.

"This is the model we created in Dundee, and we’ve done in Florence too. It’s now coming to Benson, but you can see how it can spread throughout the city, in the Blackstone area or even in Elkhorn or in the Millard area. It’s a great neighborhood business district model that we think works everywhere."

Festersen says the renovation project will attract more businesses and entrepreneurs to the area.

A separate $15 million mixed-use project at 60th Street and Northwest Radial Highway is scheduled to begin this fall.
