Books are Treats event promotes literacy

Metropolitan Community College in partnership with Metro Area Transit and the Old Market Business Association is presenting its annual Books are Treats event tomorrow from 1:00 to 4:00 in the Old Market.

Sheila O’Connor, Director of Public Affairs, says Metro takes a city bus, fills it with books and parks it downtown at 11th and Howard Streets.  O’Connor says it’s a good alternative to candy.

Kids and families can come down to the Old Market and see costumed characters while they pickup free books to take home.

She says this is a great opportunity to get books into the hands of children and families that might not otherwise have had that chance.

"Literacy is so important.  Studies and teachers ands schools all talk about the importance of reading and being read to at an early age.  And this is just a great opportunity for us to get out into the community and talk about literacy and reading. For me personally, it’s the excitement on a child’s face when they step off the bus and say ‘these are my books’”

O’Connor says all of the books were donated anonymously.
