Capital Spending Plans Rise for Iowa Businesses

The Iowa Business Councilreleased its third quarter economic outlook survey earlier this month.

Elliott Smith, Executive Director, says the survey turned in pretty good results.

He says the business council was unsure if growth trends would continue given the ups and downs of the markets and some instability in world events.

Smith says in Iowa, the council’s corporate members have good expectations for the coming six months.  He says the biggest news to come from the survey is that capital spending increased fairly significantly.

"It improved six points and that gives you some confidence or tells you employers have confidence in the coming months and year in that they are investing more in capital equipment and business infrastructure.  They are buying more machinery and quite often that will lead to higher levels of employment down the road.”

Smith says the employment number has remained the same for three months versus a year ago when the number was 11 points lower.

He says the council is happy with the survey results.
