The Archdiocese of Omaha says a new Catholic ministry center and housing for UNO students will open next fall.

The $22 million St. John Paul II Newman Center will be located at 71st and Pacific Streets near the UNO campus.

UNO Chancellor John Christensen says the Newman Center will be a place for the university’s Catholic students to practice their faith. He says it also meets a need for student housing.

"In its simplest form, the Newman Center will provide 164 students with a residential university life experience. However, for these students, it will provide a faith-based residence community, which has not been an option on our campus since its beginning about 106 years ago."

Archbishop George Lucas says the archdiocese has hoped to build a Newman Center for many years. He says it’s named after John Paul II because of his commitment to young people.
