Celebrating 25 years of the ADA

www.ada.gov

This Friday marks the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act or ADA.

The act is all-inclusive and covers every kind of disability throughout the individual’s entire life.

Tomorrow, the cities of Omaha and Lincoln will hold events in celebration of the 25th anniversary

Luke Peterson is an administrative assistant for the Nebraska Statewide Independent Living Council, an organization focused on the rights and living standards of all people with disabilities.

Peterson says the ADA protects those same individuals.

"It could be anything from accessible housing, employment non-discrimination to a simple thing like handicapped accessible stalls for parking.  It’s just a spectrum of accessibility standards through any and all kinds of disabilities."

Peterson says the Omaha event takes place tomorrow from 1-3 at Seymour Smith Park, which has a barrier-free sports and recreational complex.  Mayor Stothert will speak at that event.

The Lincoln event runs from 10-2 tomorrow at the Lincoln Community Foundations Garden.  The celebration will include guest speakers and an art sale.
