Children's Hospital & Medical Center announces a transformational expansion

Children’s Hospital & Medical Center will undergo a transformational expansion.

Dr. Richard Azizkhan, Children’s President & CEO, says the expansion was greatly needed due to the demand for pediatric specialty services.

He says Children’s overall growth has been about 6-7% a year for the last several years and that areas like surgery are growing even faster, at about 13% a year.

Dr. Azizkhan says that means Children’s has exceeded its physical capacity to care for children, especially those with complex and chronic issues.

"This is really an opportune time for us to expand the services not just for the sake of expanding but also really taking a look at the kinds of services that we provide.  Where are the gaps that we are not able to provide the level of service or the types of services?  So we are actually going to expand our programs in addition to the physical capacity of the organization.”

Dr. Azizkhan says part of the expansion will extend across 84th Street with the acquisition of the property currently leased by HDR and the Durham Plaza building.

The 7-acre site will add 223,000 square feet of office space.  He says Children’s is in an intensive planning phase at this stage and is hoping to have a detailed plan to bring to its board in the late fall of this year.
