Children's Hospital & Medical Center unveils a new TV channel for patients

Children’s Hospital & Medical Center is bringing a little bit of the outside into the hospital with its new TV Channel.

Thanks to a new partnership with the San Diego Zoo and the Henry Doorly Zoo, patients and their families will enjoy a new fun and educational TV channel.

Gary Perkins, President and CEO for Children’s Hospital & Medical Center, says the San Diego Zoo Kids’ Channel will run on Children’s closed circuit TV system in the hospital and will be accessible day or night.

Perkins says the channel will not only have pictures of animals and educational programming but will also feature the San Diego Zoo Panda Cam.

"They currently have about 12 hours of programming that is currently available.  It’s set up so it will rotate.  Tomorrow, the programs would be in a different ordered than today so if watching at the same time tomorrow as you are today, you won’t necessarily see the same programming.  And their goal within the next year is to have 30 hours of programming.”

Perkins says most of the snippets are probably in the area of two to five minutes so it’s very fast moving and should easily keep the attention of the children.

He says the service will start at Children’s Carolyn Scott Rainbow House later this year.
