City Council approves amended 2012 budget

By Katie Schubert

Omaha, NE – The Omaha City Council has approved Mayor Jim Suttle's 2012 budget plan, with two amendments.

Councilmen voted Tuesday afternoon in favor of the $730 million dollar spending plan. It contains no tax increases and no deficit. Next year's budget accounts for fewer city employees overall, although the city plans to hire 22 civilian workers for the combined sewer overflow project.

Two amendments were added to the budget. One puts more money toward street repair and maintenance. The other adds a 15-member police recruit class. That class will begin in October 2012.

In a statement, Mayor Suttle called the budget plan "responsible and strategic."
