Classes resume at Millard South High School

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – Classes resumed Friday at Millard South High School, two days after a shooting there killed Assistant Principal Vicki Kaspar.

About one thousand students gathered outside the school this morning to walk in together. Two days ago, 17-year-old Robert Butler Junior shot Kaspar and Principal Curtis Case in the school's office. Kaspar died Wednesday night. Curtis remains hospitalized at Creighton University Medical Center. Butler then took his own life.

Millard Public Schools spokeswoman Amy Friedman says 93 percent of Millard South's students came back to school today. Teachers were given a statement to read to their classes at the beginning of the school day. It reads in part "All of us at Millard South care deeply for our students and we are grateful for the support and understanding that was demonstrated by our students, staff and the Millard community."

Additional security is present at the school today. Friedman says that'll be in place for as long as needed.

Visitation for Vicki Kaspar is Monday from noon to 8 PM at Braman Mortuary, 6505 South 144th Street. Her funeral is at 10:30 AM Tuesday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.
