Coast Guard team to assess Omaha's watercraft needs

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – A U.S. Coast Guard disaster assistance response team will spend two weeks in Omaha.

Assistant Fire Chief Dan Stolinski, spokesman for Omaha's Unified Command, says the Coast Guard team will be in Omaha for two weeks, assessing the city's need for watercraft. They're also bringing three 16-foot flat-bottom boats for the city's use in the event of water rescues or wellness checks.

Stolinski says Unified Command assistance with watercraft because of a limited availability of boats. While the city has mutual aid agreements with different departments, Stolinski says those departments will need their watercraft in the event of a levee breach.

The Missouri River is at 35.5 feet in Omaha, more than six feet above flood stage.
