College of St. Mary voted one of safest small campuses in the U.S.

CollegeChoice.net recently named The College of St. Mary one of the safest small campuses in the United States.

Dave Ferber, CSM’s director of safety and security, says College Choice looks at four points including the number of hate crimes at the school as well as the number of sexual assaults on campus over the past three to five years.

Altogether, he says they generated a percentage of those incidents and then ranked the college.  He says CSM ranked 30 out of 50 and had an overall score of 90.8.

Ferber says in addition to having officers patrol the campus 24/7, his department also offers a lot of educational programs on campus to help students and employees develop better safety habits.

"We do do active shooter training just to be sure we are prepared in case an incident like that were ever to occur on our campus.  That goes along with our Bystander intervention program that helps raise awareness of helping behaviors.  It helps them increase their motivation to help and it gives them great skills and confidence when they have to deal with issues in life.”

Ferber says CSM’s “Clean Car Campaign” urges all campus community members to keep the inside of their cars clean and to remove all visible items to prevent theft.
