Competition pool for Swim Trials halfway finished

By Katie Knapp

Omaha, NE – Gone is the hardwood basketball floor the Creighton Bluejays play on during the fall and winter Qwest Center Omaha has been transformed, temporarily, into the home of the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials.

The first eight rows of the Qwest Center are taken up with the competition pool, which is halfway finished. Workers are currently installing pipes and gutters, welding the vinyl floor together, and doing several other jobs. The competition pool will be filled with water Thursday. It'll take about 14 hours to fill the pool with one million gallons of water.

The competition pool, and a smaller warm-up pool, are being used for the Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational as well. The total project cost is two million dollars.

The Swim Trials begin June 29.
