ConAgra donates 600 Currier & Ives prints to the Joslyn Art Museum

Late last week, ConAgra Foods announced it will donate its corporate collection of approximately 600 original Currier & Ives prints to theJoslyn Art Museum.

Jack Becker, Executive Director & CEO at the Joslyn, says the museum will likely receive the collection sometime in the next 60 days.

He says Currier & Ives prints have been widely collected and sought after since they’re creation in the 19th century.  Becker says the pieces will enhance the museum’s growing works on paper collection.

"Many well-known artists participated in Currier & Ives.  And there aren’t a whole lot of collections that are this size and that have this great depth.  We think it’s a great thing for us here at the museum.  It can become part of our exhibitions and our programming in the galleries.  And knowing that it will be well cared for and scholars will pay attention to it.  We think it’s a great gift and we thank our friends at ConAgra for thinking about the Joslyn to be the caretakers of this collection."

Becker says ConAgra obtained the Currier & Ives works in the late 1980’s when the company acquired Beatrice Foods, the collection’s former owner.

He says pieces from the collection were displayed over the years but most of the works have remained in storage.
