Conservation summit focuses on Nebraska's potential for clean energy production

The American Wind Energy Association says Nebraska has the potential to be third in the nation in terms of gigawatt hours of electricity produced by wind.

Renewable energy is among the topics that’ll be discussed Monday at the Nebraska Conservation Summit. Chelsea Johnson, deputy director of the Nebraska League of Conservation Voters, says polls show renewable energy and climate change are important issues to Nebraskans.

"We see rural polls all the time from UNL showing that Nebraskans overwhelmingly support development of wind energy and believe that we need to take action on climate change."

The AWEA says 4.8 percent of the state’s electricity was generated by wind power in 2013. There are 13 wind projects online in Nebraska.

Former Colorado Governor Bill Ritter, a clean energy advocate, will speak at Monday evening's Summit. It begins at 6 pm at UNO’s Scott Conference Center. More information is available at www.conservationsummit.com.
