Creighton Celebrates National Public Health Week

Dr. Tanya Morgan, Director of the Master of Public Health Program at Creighton University, says the American Public Health Association’s goal is to make the United States the healthiest nation in the world by 2030.

So “Healthiest Nation 2030” is the theme of National Public Health Week.

Tomorrow, students from Creighton will have the opportunity for a virtual hang out with the United States Surgeon General, who will cover topics like access to healthy foods and ways to encourage people to be more active.

Morgan says those who work in public health are trying to prevent people from getting sick in the first place.  She says they promote wellness by encouraging healthy behaviors.

"So it can be anywhere from conducting scientific research to educating people about health to promoting people in the field of public health and making sure they can ensure conditions that allow us to be healthy and happy.  It might be vaccinating our children or just educating people about the risk of alcohol and tobacco.”

As part of an ongoing initiative to highlight public health, Creighton will host Dr. Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association on September 20th
