Creighton students' art to benefit Siena/Francis House

A Creighton University art class’s project will benefit Omaha’s Siena/Francis House.

Students in associate professor Amy Nelson’s art and civic engagement class make bowls each semester for the Empty Bowls Project. On Wednesday and Thursday, the bowls will be sold at Creighton’s Lied Art Gallery. Everyone who buys one gets a meal of soup and bread.

Nelson says her students do volunteer work throughout the semester.

"All of their studio time, as well as some volunteering at Siena/Francis House, is all devoted to the project. So students learn some basic skills in pottery making and they all have to make a certain number of bowls throughout the semester. They also go and serve dinner at Siena Francis House, which is where all our proceeds are going to go from the event."

Creighton began participating in the Empty Bowls Project in 2006. Nelson says her class doesn’t take part in it every semester, so about 600 bowls are in storage for the event.

Since 2006, Creighton’s Empty Bowls Project has raised more than $25,000 for Siena/Francis House.
