Creighton University President to retire in July 2011

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – Creighton University President Father John Schlegel plans to retire next July.

Father Schlegel came to Creighton in July 2000. Since then the student population has grown to 7,400 students and the campus is now more than 130 acres.

Schlegel says he's proud of the quality education offered by Creighton, as well as the school's level of community involvement. He says Creighton's next president will face several challenges, including what the school's optimal size should be, and how much of its programming should be online.

Creighton's Board of Directors plans to announce details soon of the search for Father Schlegel's replacement.

After his retirement, Schlegel plans to pursue pastoral service work.
