UNMC hosts its 2013 Bike for Sight event this Saturday. Jessica Feilmeier, from UNMC's Opthamology Department, says the purpose of the event is to raise awareness of and support for a vision restoring cataract camp in Addis, Ethiopia.
She says every registered rider they have for the event will provide one sight returning surgery to a person living needlessly blind in that country.
"We are able to go in and perform the cataract surgeries at $20 an eye, which is the cost of the surgery itself. And we are doing both eyes. In post-op, from Day 1, you're able to give someone back the gift of sight."
The Bike for Sight begins at 9:00 a.m. Saturday at Miller's Landing on the downtown Omaha riverfront.
Participants can choose among 5, 10, 20 and 40 mile routes.
