Deer Park Neighborhood Association Planning Fundraiser at Appollon Art Space

Next Thursday, the Deer Park Neighborhood Association – one of the oldest and largest neighborhood associations in Omaha -- is holding a fund raiser for their new Resource Center, which they plan to open in mid-May.

Association President, Mike McGuire, says the Resource Center will offer help with job and college applications, resume building and literacy training in addition to helping their Spanish-speaking neighbors learn about programs and services available to them.  He says in the future they hope to expand to hosting a number of events and trainings.

“So we’re going to do some things with sort of knowing your rights type trainings in regards to immigration and that sort of thing. And we’d like to do some sort of cross-cultural things like sharing opportunities with refugee families; like one of the things that we want to do is have a night where a refugee family teaches people how to prepare a meal that comes from the country or the area where they’re from and share that information back and forth.”

McGuire says the Resource Center is in partnership with, and located in, the Appollon Art Space, at 1801 Vinton Street. The fund-raiser takes place on Thursday, April 27th, from 6 to 8 p.m., and will include speakers and entertainment.
