Omaha, NE – Douglas County employees donated 4,436 items to the Courthouse Food Drive Challenge.
The statewide effort ended just before Thanksgiving. The competition encouraged counties across the state to collect food to donate to their local food banks. 17 counties took part in the contest which was based on the number of items donated per employee. Phillip Rooney is a Resource Specialist with the Douglas County Health Department. He says Douglas County employees collected a little more than 33% of the items donated. Rooney says employees wanted to lead by example. He says while the employment situation in Nebraska this year was better than other areas worldwide, "There are still people that need help and we want to support the folks out there that support us through the years."
Rooney says Douglas County plans to take part in the Courthouse Food Drive Challenge again next year. He says he hopes next year the need will be less but knows the support will be greater.
