Omaha, NE – The report notes decreases in the number of asthma deaths. The death rate among minorities is also on the decline.
Dr. Pour says there's mixed news about Douglas County's STD rates. She says while the Chlamydia rates are on the declines, there's a slight increase in the number of gonorrhea cases. Dr. Pour says information from the Centers for Disease Control shows gonorrhea is starting to show resistance to treatment, which is something the Health Department needs to explore further.
The report also notes challenges, such as health disparities and the healthcare needs of immigrants. Dr. Pour says the largest challenge facing public health departments is providing services in the wake of funding cuts.
