Douglas County reports its first West Nile Virus case of the season

Douglas County has its first confirmed West Nile Virus case of the season. The Douglas County Health Department says a man over age 50 is the first confirmed case. He was not hospitalized.

West Nile Virus is spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes. Most people bitten by an infected mosquito will have no symptoms or mild, flu-like ones. People over 50 and those with compromised immune systems are more likely to become ill.

You can protect yourself from mosquito bites by using insect repellent and avoiding outdoor activities at dusk and dawn.

Nebraska recorded 142 cases of West Nile Virus last year.
