Emergency declaration issued for Wayne County

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Governor Dave Heineman has issued an emergency declaration for the area surrounding Wayne after a tornado struck the northeast Nebraska town.

A Nebraska Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman said Friday that state officials were traveling to the town to help with the response effort. A hazardous material team was on its way to Wayne to evaluate a gas leak at a supply company.

NEMA spokeswoman Jodie Fawl says early reports indicate that the majority of buildings damaged in Wayne were businesses.

Fawl says three farmhouses in Antelope County were also damaged, but it wasn't immediately clear whether they were hit by a tornado.
