End of an era: demolition begins on Rosenblatt Stadium
Omaha’s longtime home of the College World Series and Omaha Royals baseball is coming down.
Demolition began Wednesday morning on Rosenblatt Stadium. Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium opened in 1947, and was the home of the NCAA Mens College World Series for six decades. The Omaha Storm Chasers also played at Rosenblatt Stadium as the Omaha Royals, before moving to their new home in Papillion.
The Omaha Zoo Foundation bought the site for its Gateway to the Wild project. Part of that project is Infield at the Zoo. Executive director Calvin Sisson says demolition of Rosenblatt Stadium and preparing the site will cost $2.5 million and take six months.
Sisson says the $36 million Gateway to the Wild project is on schedule, and Infield at the Zoo will be complete next June.
Rosenblatt Stadium hosted its final College World Series in 2010. South Carolina won that series.
