Energy Star Names UNO as Top School for IT Sustainability

By Cheril Lee

Omaha, NE – UNO's Information Services department has been recognized for its efforts to reduce the university's environmental impact.

UNO is one of the top five colleges who have contributed to Energy Star's Low Carbon IT Power Campaign Power Management Pledge. Dekstop Manager Seth Korber says UNO has reduced energy consumption through server and desktop virtualizations and adjusted power settings.

"The goal of green IT is part of a larger industry focus to reduce the amount of energy and resources consumed by computers and their related electronic devices. The result of these green IT projects positively impacts the triple bottom line. It affects the people, the planet and the financials of the organization in a positive fashion."

The changes surrounding the servers have reduced UNO's energy consumption by 80% and have saved the university over $1 million in hardware costs.
