Everyday conflict and dispute resolution focus of public forum at Creighton

Creighton University will present a public discussion forum on crisis management in conflict resolution tomorrow at the Harper Center Auditorium.

Jeff Thompson, a detective and hostage negotiator with the New York City Police Department, is the guest speaker.

He says he will talk about crisis communication skills and how he applies them primarily in the policing context.

Thompson says those same skills are applicable no matter what industry a person works in, from the medical field to retail and everything in between.

"A crisis situation is unique to the individual.  When someone is in crisis, their actions are being dictated by their emotions, a collection of negative emotions, If you want to have a peaceful resolution, whether you’re a cop or anyone else, what you want to do is reduce the negative emotions and bring back a bit more of the rational thinking process in the person.”

Thompson earned his Master’s degree in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution in 2010 from the Werner Institute at the Creighton School of Law.  His presentation takes place Thursday, September 17th at 5:30.
