Excessive Heat Warning in effect through Tuesday morning

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect through Tuesday morning for the entire listening area.

The National Weather Service says temperatures will approach 100 degrees by Sunday, with a heat index above 110. Every year, 1,500 people die from heat-related illness, according to the CDC.

Douglas County Health Department Resource Director Phil Rooney says a prolonged heat wave can be particularly dangerous because it creates more opportunities to become ill. If you must be outside, you should avoid activities during the hottest part of the day and take frequent breaks. Drink plenty of water and stay out of the sun.

Also, don't leave children or pets in closed vehicles.
