Expert talks about healthy pregnancies for at-risk women

By Cheril Lee

Omaha, NE – Women who are at-risk of having a complicated pregnancy include those who lack access to medical care or cannot afford it.

Dr. Serena Wu is an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at UNMC. She says women who are at-risk of having a complicated pregnancy need to optimize their medical issues prior to becoming pregnant.

Before an unintended or unexpected pregnancy occurs, she encourages these women to take control of their health.

"If they haven't been thinking about becoming pregnant, usually things such as taking a prenatal vitamin, exercising, checking their cholesterol and sugars, even going to see their doctor on an annual basis, hasn't been done."

UNMC holds forums periodically that are designed to help grow healthy families and support healthy pregnancies. For details, the website is connectionsproject.net.
