Fall Rainbow Trout Stocking Underway in Nebraska Waters

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is completing its fall trout stocking through the end of October.

Daryl Bauer, Fisheries Outreach Program Manager, says roughly 50,000 catchable-size trout will be stocked in 47 bodies of water across the state. He says trout are great for introducing children to fishing, especially this time of year:

“The trout, as long as they are not spooked, are usually pretty catchable. Some of the warm-water species get a little tougher to catch this time of year, but the trout are still pretty easy to catch.  You know, we’re hoping that beginning anglers, and especially kids, are the ones that can take advantage of these stockings, catch some fish and get hooked on fishing.”

All of these rainbow trout were hatched and raised in one of the five Nebraska fish hatcheries, and Bauer says they aim to get them close to a lot of beginning anglers.  He says youth under the age of 16 can fish without a permit, but non-residents under the age of 16 must be accompanied by someone with a valid permit.
