A Few Words About Jazz
KIOS presents a special for Jazz Appreciation Month focusing on the historical role of critics in jazz.
A Few Words About Jazz: John Gennari's Blowin' Hot and Cool is an hour-long program of classic jazz featuring an interview with John Gennari, author of the book Blowin' Hot And Cool, which examines the role of critics in jazz history.
Although jazz critics have done much to advance the music throughout it's history, they have also often been sources of controversy, particularly in their relationship with musicians and their responses to certain aesthetic directions such as bebop and free jazz. We'll hear some of the music that has provoked debate and discussion among critics, such as Duke Ellington's "Reminiscin' In Tempo" and John Coltrane's "Chasin' The Trane".
A Few Words About Jazz: John Gennari's Blowin' Hot and Cool is part of the series Night Lights from WFIU at Indiana University and is hosted by David Brent Johnson. It will be heard Friday, April 9 at 8:00pm on KIOS-FM.
