Film Streams series explores rock and roll

An upcoming series at Film Streams focuses on the voices and history of rock and roll.

The Sights on Sounds documentaries begin Sunday with The Wrecking Crew. It’s a film about the musicians who played backing music for famous artists in the 1960s.

Film Streams spokesman Patrick Kinney says director Penelope Spheeris will speak on August 2 about her documentary, called The Decline of Western Civilization.

“The film is a really unique look at the punk underground of Los Angeles in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It was only available through bootleg copies for a long time, so most people who know the film have probably only seen really poor quality VHS tapes of it, or have seen it maybe on YouTube or something like that.”

On August 9, Film Streams will show the follow-up documentary about metal music.

Other presentations include the documentary Heaven Adores You, which focuses on the life and music of Omaha native Elliott Smith. The series ends September 6 with the showing of Montage of Heck, about the life of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.
