Fire destroys historic church in western Iowa

HARLAN, Iowa (AP) — Firefighters from Harlan and several nearby communities were unable to save a historic church building in the western Iowa city.

Some firefighters were called out Monday morning to put down flames that had risen in the charred remains of Sunday's blaze. No injuries have been reported.

The St. Michael's Catholic Church building had sat empty for about five years since a new parish building was erected nearby.

The fire cause is being investigated.
