Firm looks for new Omaha location, abandons downtown plans

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Architecture and engineering firm HDR has decided to seek a different Omaha location for its global headquarters, abandoning plans to move downtown.

HDR Chairman and CEO George Little announced the change of plans Thursday, saying it wasn't in the company's best interests to move downtown because the project didn't develop as it was originally proposed. He says the company is looking for a new location in Omaha.

He says the project's cost increases and the loss of a previously planned parking facility nearby were the main reasons behind the decision.

Mayor Jean Stothert says it was "disappointing and regrettable" that an agreement couldn't be reached.

HDR was in the process of buying land owned by Omaha Performing Arts.

The company now is based at a suburban-style campus west of downtown.
