First Community Health Improvement Plan set for Release this month

The public unveiling of the first-ever Community Health Improvement Plan takes place October 17th at the

Omaha Health Summit.

Mary Balluff is Chief of Community Health and Nutrition Services for the Douglas County Health Department. She says the plan is meant to show people how we can be a healthier community.

Balluff says the plan has four primary objectives: access to care, nutrition and obesity, violence prevention in children and behavioral health.

"This is a plan for everyone in this community. We all can be a part of making us a healthier community. Much of the plan is about creating the opportunity for people to be healthy. So that’s looking at our environment and our systems as opposed to saying, ‘what are you personally doing in your behaviors.’”

Balluff says more than 150 people, from business leaders to social services employees, have been working on different pieces of the plan since April.

The Community Health Improvement Plan will be unveiled on October 17th at the Downtown Omaha Hilton.

Balluff says everyone will be able to see the plan at that time and find out how they can be a part of it.
