First of five learning community forums focuses on taxes, test scores

By Katie Knapp

Omaha, NE – Taxes, test scores and drop out rates were all big topics at the first of five public forums about the learning community.

The public forum was held Tuesday night at Omaha South high school. The learning community became law last year and will be implemented in 2010.

Omaha Public Schools Superintendent Dr. John Mackiel says the goal is to give all students, regardless of socioeconomic status, the same access to educational opportunities.

Budget and action plans for the learning community have not yet been developed. In November, the public will elect members of the Learning Community Coordinating Council.

The next learning community forum is Thursday night at North High School.
