Former bookstore site in Omaha to become digital library

A digital library and technology center will open in central Omaha next fall.

Heritage Services announced Wednesday that they’ve bought the former Borders bookstore property at 72nd and Dodge Streets. The organization focuses on fundraising and planning. The digital library will open next fall, offering maker space, classes, and high-speed technology access for the entire community.

Mike McCarthy of the Heritage Services board says the center is unique.

"It should be unexpected and innovative, a place to access technology. Here at 72nd and Dodge will become the hub of the new technology access. This space is an empty box, but it will invite everyone who wants to learn, just like our current library system does, and add extraordinary access to the tools of technology."

The Omaha Public Library system and Metropolitan Community College are partners on the project. MCC president Randy Schmailzl says classes will be offered at the digital library.

Heritage Services says a trust will fund the first four years of the library’s operation.
