Fremont council OKs Costco chicken plant development deal

FREMONT, Neb. (AP) — The Fremont City Council has approved a development agreement with Costco Wholesale for locating a chicken processing plant in the eastern Nebraska community.

The Omaha World-Herald reports that the council unanimously voted Tuesday to provide financial and other aid to Costco and Georgia-based Lincoln Premium Poultry. The companies say the $300 million facility targeted for land on the south side of Fremont will provide 1,100 new jobs. The project manager says construction could begin early next year if Costco gives the final OK in August.

However, a lawsuit filed Monday by a citizens group could alter those plans. It targets one of the monetary incentives Costco has secured: tax-increment financing of property improvements the plant needs. The group has asked a judge to bar city action on the project.
