Gas prices below $2 a gallon in many Omaha locations

Gas prices in the Omaha area are 72 cents lower than one month ago, according to tracking site GasBuddy.com.

As of Sunday, gas prices in Omaha averaged $2.08 a gallon. In many places, prices are below two dollars. Patrick DeHaan, a Senior Petroleum Analyst with GasBuddy.com, says a shift in attitudes about oil prices by some Middle East nations has driven down prices.

"All of this decline really started by a major shift in the Saudis’ attitude, a country that usually wants higher oil prices and supports higher oil prices, suddenly cut oil prices at the end of September. That was followed then by Iran and Iraq cutting their oil prices. And since then, it’s been a barrage of comments on how the Saudis and OPEC are more acceptable of far lower prices."

DeHaan says gas prices in the Midwest are some of the lowest in the country. He expects prices to remain consistent until late winter or early spring, when there's a switch to a different blend of gasoline.

Gas prices in Nebraska overall are down 66 cents from last month.
