Gas tax increase wins final approval in Nebraska Legislature

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lawmakers have given final approval to a proposed increase in Nebraska's gas tax, but appeared to be short of the support needed to override Gov. Pete Ricketts' expected veto.

The bill that passed Thursday would raise the state gas tax by 6 cents over four years to help pay for road and bridge repairs. The measure would generate an estimated $76 million a year once fully implemented.

Ricketts has said lawmakers were wrong to throw tax dollars at the problem, and argued the state should look at other options.

The bill was introduced by Sen. Jim Smith of Papillion, a conservative who normally opposes tax increases. Smith says good roads promote economic growth.

The bill passed, 26-15. Supporters need 30 votes to override a veto.
