LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A taxpayer advocacy group says it will campaign against a ballot measure to increase Nebraska's minimum wage.
Nebraska Taxpayers for Freedom says it has begun a statewide effort to defeat the proposal, which would raise the minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $9 an hour by 2016. Voters are expected to decide the issue in the November election.
The measure's supporters submitted nearly 135,000 signatures last week to place the issue on the ballot. About 80,000 verified signatures are required for it to qualify.
Nebraska's minimum wage was last increased in 2009. Twenty-one states have minimum wages above the federal minimum of $7.25 an hour, including the bordering states of Colorado and Missouri.
