Omaha, NE – An Iowa lawmaker says he wants Congress to act on an immediate extension of unemployment benefits.

More than two million Americans will lose those benefits at the end of December. Iowa Senator Tom Harkin says 10,000 Iowans will be without unemployment benefits at the end of the month.

The Democrat Iowa Senator also hopes for the passage of food safety and child nutrition legislation. The child nutrition bills changes school lunch and school breakfast programs. Harkin says the goals are to remove junk food and make school meals healthier.

Harkin also wants approval of the START treaty during the lame duck session. His comments came Thursday during the Senator's weekly conference call with media.
