Harkin: it's time for Congress to pass ENDA

The U.S. Senate Thursday afternoon passed a measure banning employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

It’s called the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, or ENDA. The bill passed on a 61-30 vote Monday night, setting up the vote for final passage. Iowa Senator Tom Harkin is in favor of ENDA.

"We will say to our lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender brothers and sisters that they are fully included and respected members of our American family. No longer will we tolerate discrimination based on who you are or whom you choose to love. Frankly, this is another example of Congress playing catch-up with the views and wishes of the American people."

Iowa U.S. Senator Charles Grassley voted against ENDA earlier this week, saying he opposes it on religious grounds. Harkin’s comments came Thursday during his weekly conference call with media.
