Health Department emphasizes safety during bitterly cold weather

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – More bitterly cold temperatures are forecast this week in Omaha.

The Douglas County Health Department says frostbite can set in within a few minutes of being out in the cold. Resource Specialist Phil Rooney says cold weather safety starts with dressing warmly. If you must be outside, you should dress in layers and wear loose-fitting clothing. Tight clothing can reduce blood circulation. Pay special attention to your head, hands, ears and feet.

Rooney says you should also be careful when using a space heater. Make sure they aren't placed near anything combustible. Also, be aware of the risks of carbon monoxide poisoning from using some types of space heaters.
